Hearing Aids - Know how it works.

by Paul D. Johnson

While our advanced hearing aids have indeed been around for literally decades, the origins of the devices can be traced to a conical object that needed to be held up to the ear manually. Far from being very convenient, the original funnel shaped devices did work, however and they achieved this by directing the sound into the ear. It’s probably a given that many people know that contemporary hearing devices have a much higher degree of technology, but not everyone truly understands how they work.

The usage of small microphones inside hearing aids is how they work. First, as the device gets the sound, it is converted to electrical or digital signals, then it is reconverted back to sound as it is sent to a speaker. Microphone settings are dependent upon how bad the hearing loss is and how much distraction is present in the person’s every day environment.

Environment here refers to how much and what kind of noise you are usually around. A person who needs to hear high frequency noises will need to have a different setting than a person who is constantly exposed to a conversational environment, for example. These different factors will help your audiologist adjust the settings on your device but this is only part of the answer as to how they work.

For hearing aids, there are three essential types of hearing aids that help to receive and convert the signals. The analog adjustable is both the least expensive type of technology and the least advanced. This type can easily be adjusted by your audiologist. After the factory custom makes it for you, you will have the option to control the volume manually or automatically.

A Hearing aid will also include a type of circuitry known as the analog programmable. These are somewhat better than the analog adjustable because they can be programmed using a computer. It is programmed by the audiologist: he or she will program in various types of sound capture and transmission possibilities.

Since different situations require different settings, the user is furnished with a remote control to control the settings. If you want a device that is the most advanced, you would go for the digital programmable device but it is also the one that is going to cost you the most amount of money. It took a good deal of time to get this device to be an alternative people could use, as it was first impossible to make, and then too large to be of any use so scientists have since refined the process.

These digital hearing aids use DSP - Digital Sound Processing - to work. A computer chip analyzes and will process the sound before the amplification process begins in the ear. This is used to give them the correct settings. At this point, the data is changed back into sound, as it gets sent through the ear. The digital models also have the capability of detecting and eliminating feedback by identifying the frequencies which work automatically with little adjustment from the wearer.

In recent years, hearing aids have increased dramatically. If you need help hearing, you have a variety of options available. Hearing aids are a very important device that works through the aid of technology.
